WFTU statement on the hunger strike of temporary teachers of Nepal

The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing 92 million workers in the 5 continents, expresses its support and solidarity with the Nepalese Temporary Teachers who are on hunger strike for 6 days.

Over the last 25 years, 26000 public school teachers work under temporary status without social security, basic wage, uniform facilities and promotions. The teachers are on strike, demanding the fulfillment of their demands in order to teach under permanent and dignified working conditions.

The WFTU and the international class-oriented trade union movement, committed to their principles and the resolutions of the 17th World Trade Union Congress, demand the prompt satisfaction of the fair demands of the Nepalese temporary school teachers. The government of Nepal and all the competent authorities, have to consider and respect the non-negotiable workers’ rights as well as the important role of the teachers in society and implement their demands immediately.
