INDIA GOES DOWN IN DEMOCRACY INDEX ALSO.

In almost all global social index India is faring badly. Now, in democracy index also India has dropped 10 ranks in the 2019 global index. India’s overall score fell from 7.23 to 6.9 on a scale of 0-10 and it is the lowest since the index began in 2006. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy  index report was released on 22nd January, 2020.

The report titled ” A year of democartic setbacks and popular protests” mentions the revocation of Jammu & Kashmir special status, NRC and the Citizenship Amendment Act. The Index also categorises India under “Flawed Democracies” along with USA, countries that hold free and fair elections but have significant weaknesses in aspects of democracy, such as problems in governance, an underdeveloped political culture and low level of political participation.

According to the report, there are only 22 “full democracies” as compared to 54 authoritarian regimes. 165 countries and two territories were analysed and in the Asia, Australia region, India ranks eighth behind Taiwan and Timor-Leste.
