Speech at the 114th Session of the ILO Conference by Comrade Anda Anastaski, Deputy General Secretary, TUI(P&R) of WFTU.
Madam President,
Distinguished delegates,
On behalf of the World Federation of Trade Unions, I bring the warm greetings of its 105 million members in 133 countries across the 5 continents.
We address this assembly with the voice of workers and pensioners, in the name of our international trade union family, the International Federation of Pensioners and Retirees, whose affiliates in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America have entrusted us with their message.
The reality we observe today is one of profound injustice. Millions of pensioners around the world live on humiliating pensions that do not cover their basic needs. Capitalist governments and multinationals have transformed social protection into a commodity, abandoning the elderly to poverty. The saying “they swallow the horses when they age” reflects this harsh truth: when workers become unproductive for the system, they are discarded like a burden.
This situation is worsened by the wars that ravage our world. The wars in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Africa have caused inflation, increased the cost of living, and destroyed social gains. Military spending, supported by NATO and the European Union, diverts resources that should be allocated to health, education, and pensions.
From this podium, we say it clearly:
Stop the wars! Stop the arms race!
Conflicts must be resolved through negotiation, not through the suffering of peoples.
The genocide that is being carried out in Palestine is a crime against humanity. We demand an immediate end to this massacre and the recognition of the right of the Palestinian people to their independent state.
At the same time, the blockade against Cuba must be lifted. The Cuban people have the right to live without external aggression and to build their future freely.
We reaffirm that the struggle for dignified pensions is inseparable from the struggle for peace. Without peace, there is no social justice. Without social justice, there is no dignity for workers and pensioners.
The WFTU, faithful to its founding principles, calls on all pensioners and workers to organize, to join the unions, and to fight for a world where the fruits of labor serve the people and not the profits of a few.
We invite you all to participate in the World Day of Action for Pensioners, which will be held on October 1st, hosted this year in South Africa. Let this day be a cry of unity and solidarity of pensioners across the globe.
Long live international solidarity!
Long live the struggle of workers and pensioners!
For a world without wars, without exploitation, without poverty!
Thank you.
