The world is observing 8th March as the International Womens Day. We have been hearing the rhetoric of gender equality, equal opportunity and equal wages for the women for sometime long. Many of us condemn in strong words the attacks on women. Still not a single day passes without the reports of violences against women and even minor girls are not spared. There are statutory rules in almost all the countries for stringent punishment against atrocities against women, including sexual assault. But unfortunately these rules seldom save the women from attacks. The Bill to ensure 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures is still kept in freezer for so many years. This reflects the real mindset of major political parties towards women. Even in the case of party positions, capable and qualified women are being sidelined. When we observe the International Womens Day, let us all introspect whether we are doing justice to the women of all the spheres. The fact remains that the atrocities against women and the sheer exploitatation is rampant in the capitalist countries and surely women are treated better in socialist countries.
