10 ways to prevent a heatstroke

With mercury rising in several parts of the country and heat wave making life difficult, here are 10 ways to beat the heat.

1.

Drink plenty of fluids

It will help your body sweat and maintain a normal body temperature. Those undertaking heavy exercise should drink two-four glasses of cool fluids each hour.

2.

Wear light clothing

Wearing excess clothing or tight apparels won’t allow your body to cool properly.

3.

Take extra precautions with certain medications

Many blood pressure and heart medications cause the blood flow to decrease, thus affecting the ability to cool down. One should consult doctor on the dosage.

4.

See a doctor

If you have symptoms such as high body temperature, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, seek immediate medical help.

5.

Advance morningwalk time

It’s best not to exercise or do any strenuous activity in daytime. But if you must, take breaks & consume enough fluids.

6.

Avoid the hottest part of the day

If you can’t avoid strenuous activity in hot weather, drink fluids and rest frequently in a cool spot.

7.

Protect against sunburn

Sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool itself, so protect yourself outdoors with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses; use a broadspectrum sunscreen.

8.

Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages or alcohol

These can act as a diuretic, which moves fluids out of the body too quickly, resulting in dehydration and heat exhaustion.

9.

Never leave anyone in a parked car

This is a common cause of heat-related deaths among children. When parked in the sun, the temperature in your car rises more.

10.

Let your body acclimatize to the heat

Sudden change in temperature can cause illness. It is better to rest a bit before getting into an airconditioned building immediately after being in the sun for a long time.
