Government compelled to cancel orders denying EPF withdrawal – Great victory for workers

.

Before the strong protest of the trade unions and workers as also the huge protest rallies in Karnataka, the central government is compelled to retract from its decision not to allow full withdrawal from EPF before retirement. The Press Statement issued by the government on 21st April 2016 is given below:

This is a great victory for the working class!

Press Information Bureau Government of India Ministry of Labour & Employment 21-April-2016 17:51 IST

Government had issued a notification dated 10th February 2016 regarding rules for withdrawal from EPF Funds by the members. Under the revised rules, the employee was permitted to withdraw the employees’ share from the fund (which is 12% of the wages). However, it was prescribed that the employers’ share of contribution towards the Provident Fund (which is 3.67% of wage) would be allowed to be withdrawn only at the age of retirement (58 years). The objective was to provide a minimum social security to the workers at the time of retirement. It was noticed that over 80% of the claims settled by EPFO belonged to pre-mature withdrawal of funds, treating the EPF accounts as savings accounts, and not a Social Security instrument.

In order to address the issues the amendment stated above was carried out with the consent of Trade Unions and with the intention of promoting a decent accumulation of provident fund for the members at the end of their working lifetimes.  However, considering the representations received from various quarters and after consultations with the various stakeholders, Minister of State (IC) Labour and Employment, Sh Bandaru Dattatreya announced that the government has decided to withdraw the said 10th February 2016 Notification with immediate effect.

Accordingly, the workers are now allowed to withdraw the entire amount from the provident fund as per existing provisions of the EPF Scheme 1952 including the employers’ share of 3.67%.

WFTU SUPPORTS THE JUST DEMANDS OF THE NORWEGIAN WORKERS IN TOURISM SECTOR.

24 Apr 2016

The World Federation of Trade Unions representing 92 million workers in 126 countries of the world supports the workers in Hotels and Restaurants who decided to go on strike today April 24th.

They demand the raises in their salaries applied in the contract signed by the Federation and the employers of the sector. The employers are refusing to apply the sectoral contract they have already agreed.

The last years the profits of the Hotels and Restaurants are very high, but in contrast the workers in the sector are lowly-paid. We call all the Norwegian workers to support their colleagues and strengthen the lines of the class oriented trade union movement.

WFTU DENOUNCES NATO PRESENCE IN THE AEGEAN SEA

The World Federation of Trade Unions addresses the international public opinion and the workers of the world and denounces the presence of NATO forces in the Aegean Sea, allegedly responding to the waves of refugees traveling towards Europe.

The imperialist intervention of the USA, the NATO and the EU, Turkey, Israel and the Gulf Monarchies against the people of Syria and other peoples of the region has led to the death of hundreds of thousands of people and has forced millions to become refugees and live in poverty. This imperialist intervention has now become even deeper and this activity is the reason for the millions of refugees and displaced people.

The gathering of NATO forces in the Aegean sea is not about the refugees, but it has to do with the competition within the imperialist system and the developments in Syria, preparing new intervention in more countries of the region, if the imperialists judge so. The peoples of Greece, Turkey and other Southeastern Mediterranean countries have a bitter experience from their participation in the NATO and its presence in the area: dictatorships, wars and terrorism against the peoples.

We condemn the acts of the governments of Turkey and Greece, whose stance strengthens the NATO presence in the Southeastern Mediterranean.

On behalf of the its 92 million members around the world, the WFTU condemns the imperialist intervention of NATO in this region and calls upon the class oriented trade union movement, the peoples movement, first and foremost in the countries of Southeastern Mediterranean, but also in all countries of the world, to be alert and fight against the new imperialist interventions that are planned, demand the dissolution of NATO and the withdrawal of all US military forces and bases from the region.
