GREECE TURNS LEFT- RULING NEW DEMOCRACY PARTY SUFFERS HUMILIATING DEFEAT.

tsipras

The people of Greece has given a fitting rebuff to the ruling New Democracy Party and the incumbent Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who was imposing austerity and more hardship on the people. They have elected the leftist  party Syriza, which got 149 seats out of 300. Its leader, Alexis Tsipras has been appointed as the Prime Minister. Another party, Independent Greeks, is supporting the new government. The people were fed up with austerity measures, which reduced salaries, pension etc. as also jobs and increased unemployment. Continuous agitations and strikes were organised by the working class against austerity.

How the new government will deal with the huge debt and other issues will have to be seen. The Euro countries  like Germany had already started stating that the debts can not be waived, which will be one of the demands of the new government.

Hearty Congratulations to the victory of Syriza and the new Left Government in Greece.

WFTU, World Federation of Trade Unions, on behalf of its 90 million members all over the world, strongly condemns the violent assault of the Basque trade union LAB´s offices perpetrated by Civil Guard´s forces in the early hours of January 12th. Following the assault, several union´s leaders as well as some lawyers have been arrested.

LAB is a veteran trade union acknowledged and recognized by the international trade union movement as well as member of the WFTU, and therefore deserves our greatest respect. WFTU rejects the actions taken by the Spanish Police forces as these are the methods used by the authoritarian governments of the Third World.

WFTU express its class solidarity with LAB trade union´s comrades and demand from the Spanish authorities the immediate release of LAB members and lawyers.
